The Cinémathèque suisse is the national film archive in Switzerland. Its collections, including over 90’000 titles, expand over various film, video and digital carriers. In charge of the preservation of national film heritage in the country, the Cinémathèque’s collections are enriched day by day, most importantly with digital additions since the early 2010s. In an effort to improve our digital preservation practices, we are always on the lookout for new technologies, such as DNA archiving, that will make the motion pictures last longer, and that, in a more sustainable way.

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s mission is to develop and apply science and technology to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce global threats; and solve other emerging national security and energy challenges.

With Zetabytes of data in need to be stored for long-term archival already today, the EC funded project OligoArchive (https://oligoarchive.eu) will develop the fundamental technologies needed to make DNA storage a reality. Running for three years, the project brings together all experts across Europe to build an end-to end prototype for DNA storage. The resulting technology will make DNA storage comparable to today’s archival storage in terms of speed but will make long-term data archival more cost-effective.

The Claude Nobs Foundation oversees the curation and conservation of Claude Nobs’ audio & visual archives, which is one of the World’s largest private collection of “live” music recordings – all of which was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland) since 1967.  Having started with jazz in the early days, over the next 54 years, the collection has grown and enriched itself with new genres of music ranging from blues and rock, to rap, soul, Latin and many more.  In 2007, Claude Nobs Foundation joined forces with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) to create a unique, first of its kind, high resolution digital archive of the Festival. Considered both as an educational tool and research infrastructure, this audiovisual heritage has become a unique platform for students and researchers to innovate in fields such as acoustics, data science, archiving, musicology, museology, or neurosciences. Driven by the EPFL Cultural Heritage & Innovation Center, the “Montreux Jazz Digital Project” is an accelerator for innovation in technology, culture, social sciences and open science. Today the library has become one of the largest testimonies of live music in the World, with over 5,000 individual performances.  The collection is unequaled and has a universal significance for current and future generations.   As a result, in June 2013, it was inscribed to UNESCO’s international Memory of the World Register, the documentary equivalent of “World Heritage”.
